Water Is Running Right Now

If water is spraying from the backflow preventer or bubbling up in the yard, do this first:

  1. Close the irrigation shutoff valve. It is usually where the irrigation line leaves the house plumbing, in the basement, crawlspace, or garage, or beside the water meter.
  2. If you cannot find it, close the main water shutoff to the house.
  3. Turn the controller to off so it does not try to run a zone.
  4. Call us. Once the supply is closed, the damage stops getting worse.

What Freezing Does to a Sprinkler System

Water expands when it turns to ice. Inside a closed pipe or fitting there is nowhere for it to go, so the part splits. The parts that fail, roughly in the order they freeze:

PartWhat you seeTypical repair cost
Backflow preventerWater spraying from the brass body or the test ports when the supply is turned on$300 to $600 to replace
ValvesA zone that will not shut off, or a flooded valve box$80 to $200 per valve
Spray and rotor headsCracked bodies, heads that leak at the base or do not rise$15 to $40 per head
Lateral linesWet or sunken spots between heads, a zone with no pressure$150 to $400 per break

A single hard freeze on an unprotected system commonly causes $500 to $1,500 in damage. These are general ranges, not a quote. Most repair visits start with a diagnostic fee that is credited toward the work.

Damage You Cannot See Until Spring

Most freeze damage is found in April, not January. The system is off all winter, so a cracked pipe shows no sign until the water is turned back on. Signs at startup:

  • The backflow preventer sprays or drips as soon as the supply valve is opened
  • One zone has weak pressure while the others are normal
  • Water surfaces in the lawn within a minute of a zone starting
  • The water meter is turning with every zone off

This is why we pressurize the system slowly and walk every zone at a spring startup, and do not just flip the controller on.

How We Repair It

We isolate the system, find each break, and replace what is cracked: backflow assemblies, valves, manifolds, fittings, heads, and sections of pipe. Sandy Ocean County soil makes most breaks quick to dig up. After the repair we pressure-test the zone and run it to confirm the fix before we leave. If the freeze exposed a design problem, such as pipe that is too shallow or a backflow in an exposed spot, we will tell you what it would take to prevent a repeat.

Not Winterized Yet and It Is Already Cold?

It is not too late. A blowout in late November or December still protects everything that has not already frozen. Close the shutoff, drain the backflow using our guide to winterizing a backflow preventer, and call for the next available slot.

Prevention Costs Less Than Any Repair on This Page

A winterization runs $85 to $150 for most homes. See what happens if you do not winterize, the winterization and blow-out service, or put it on autopilot with an annual service plan.
