Drip Irrigation — Garden Bed & Landscape Systems in South Jersey

Drip irrigation is the most water-efficient way to keep your garden beds, shrubs, trees, and landscaping hydrated. Instead of spraying water into the air (where a significant amount evaporates or blows off target), drip systems deliver water directly to the root zone of each plant — slowly, quietly, and precisely. Coastal Mist Irrigation designs and installs drip irrigation systems throughout South Jersey.

What Is Drip Irrigation?

Drip irrigation uses a network of flexible tubing and emitters to deliver small amounts of water directly to the base of individual plants. The system runs at low pressure and can be as simple as a single garden bed or as complex as a whole-property system serving hundreds of individual plantings.

Drip systems are ideal for garden beds, foundation plantings, ornamental shrubs, trees and saplings, raised garden beds and vegetable gardens, slope plantings where spray irrigation causes runoff, and areas where turf spray would damage sensitive plants.

Benefits of Drip Irrigation in South Jersey

  • Water Savings: Drip irrigation uses up to 30–50% less water than spray irrigation for the same plantings. In South Jersey’s coastal communities — where water rates are rising and conservation matters — this is a significant advantage.
  • Healthier Plants: Consistent, targeted moisture at the root zone reduces plant stress, discourages fungal disease (no wet foliage), and promotes deeper root development.
  • No Runoff: Drip systems eliminate the pooling and runoff that spray systems can cause on slopes or compacted soils common in parts of Ocean and Atlantic Counties.
  • Weed Reduction: Because drip systems only water the root zone of intended plants, surrounding soil stays drier — which means fewer weeds germinating between your plantings.
  • Works with Any Controller: Drip zones can be added to your existing irrigation system and controlled through the same timer or smart controller as your lawn zones.

Drip Irrigation vs. Spray Irrigation — Which Is Right for You?

Spray irrigation (traditional sprinkler heads) is the right choice for turf grass areas. Drip irrigation is the right choice for beds, borders, and individual plantings. Most South Jersey properties benefit from a combination of both — turf zones with spray heads, and bed zones with drip emitters. Our custom system designs incorporate both technologies where appropriate.

Adding Drip to an Existing System

If you already have a sprinkler system, we can add a dedicated drip zone (or multiple zones) without replacing your existing setup. We’ll tap into your current mainline, install a pressure regulator and filter specific to the drip zone, run the supply tubing through your beds, and place emitters at each plant. The new drip zone is then added to your existing controller’s programming.

This is a great option if you’ve added new garden beds, recently landscaped, or are looking to improve the efficiency of your overall irrigation system without a full replacement.

Drip Irrigation Maintenance

Drip systems require seasonal maintenance just like spray systems. Emitters can clog with mineral deposits, tubing can be pierced by garden tools, and animals sometimes chew through supply lines. We inspect drip systems as part of our spring startup service and can address any issues found. Drip systems also need to be winterized — we blow them out as part of our standard fall winterization service.
