What Is a Sprinkler Blowout — and Why Does It Matter?
A sprinkler winterization (or “blowout”) uses a high-CFM air compressor to force all water out of your underground pipes, valves, and heads before the ground freezes. Even a small amount of water left in the lines can expand when it freezes, cracking PVC pipes, shattering heads, and splitting valve bodies.
In South Jersey, ground freeze typically begins in late November through December. The window to safely blow out your system is mid-October through mid-November — before nighttime temps consistently drop below 32°F.
What Happens If You Don’t Winterize
Skipping winterization is a gamble that rarely pays off. Here’s what we commonly see in spring on systems that weren’t blown out:

Can You DIY a Sprinkler Blowout?
Technically yes — but it requires a large-volume air compressor (at least 20–50 CFM depending on zone size), which most homeowners don’t own. A pancake compressor from the hardware store won’t cut it. Rental compressors work but require knowing exactly what you’re doing — too much pressure can blow out heads and damage valves.
