Sprinkler winterization in Toms River, done before the freeze: Coastal Mist Irrigation blows out and winterizes lawn sprinkler systems across Toms River every fall with a commercial high-volume compressor, clearing every zone two to three times so no water is left to freeze. We are based a few minutes south of town, so Toms River is on our route every week of the season. Call or text 609-548-5187 to get on the calendar.
Around Toms River people call this a sprinkler closing, a blowout, or a winterization. They all mean the same visit: we shut the irrigation supply off, drain the backflow preventer, push compressed air through each zone until the heads throw mist instead of water, and set the controller for winter. If you are searching for any of the three, you are in the right place. Our main winterization and blow-out service page covers the process in more detail.
The winterization window here runs from about October 15 through November 15. Toms River sits in USDA Zone 7a/7b, and ground temperatures drop below freezing from late November into February most years. The above-ground backflow preventer is the first thing to go on a cold night, well before buried pipe is at risk, which is why we do not recommend pushing past mid-November. Our 2026 winterization schedule has book-by dates for the whole county.
Homes in Silverton, East Dover, Gilford Park, and along the Toms River itself sit close to the water table on sandy fill. Pipe often runs shallow there, and low spots hold water after the first pass. Those are the systems where the second and third cycle matter most.
Ortley Beach and the other oceanside sections close up early. If the house is seasonal, tell us when you book and we will work out access to the shutoff and controller so the system is done before you leave for the winter.
North Dover and Pleasant Plains have bigger properties with more zones and longer lateral runs. More pipe means more water to move, so those appointments take longer and should be booked earlier in the window.
Most residential winterizations in our area run $85 to $150 depending on zone count. A 4 to 5 zone system is typically $85 to $110, 6 to 8 zones is $110 to $135, and 9 to 12 zones is $135 to $165. The full breakdown is in our Jersey Shore winterization cost guide. If you want the spring startup handled too, ask about our annual service plan, which bundles both visits plus a mid-season checkup.
Do I need to be home?
Often not. If we can reach the irrigation shutoff and the controller, we can do the work while you are out. Many Toms River shutoffs are in a basement or crawlspace, so tell us where yours is when you book.
Can I do it myself?
You can if you have a compressor that moves enough air. Most homeowner compressors do not, and a partial blowout leaves water in the low spots. Our DIY vs. professional blowout comparison lays out the real cost.
What if I skip a year?
Cracked lateral lines, split valves, and a broken backflow preventer are the usual result. See what happens if you do not winterize.
