Last-Minute Sprinkler Winterization: How Late Is Too Late in Ocean County?

Quick answer: In Ocean County, the safe window for winterizing a sprinkler system closes around November 15. After that you are relying on the weather. If you are reading this late, it is still worth doing: a blowout in late November or even December protects every part that has not already frozen.

What One Cold Night Actually Does

A single frost does not freeze buried pipe. The ground holds heat, and it takes a sustained cold spell to reach lines a foot down. That is why systems often survive a few cold nights.

The backflow preventer is different. It is above ground, made of brass, and holds water. A night in the upper twenties, especially with wind, is enough to crack it. Replacement runs $300 to $600. So the first hard freeze is a backflow problem, and the deeper cold that follows is a pipe and valve problem.

Where in the County Matters

  • Inland: Jackson, Manchester, Lakewood, and the western parts of Lacey, Berkeley, and Toms River freeze first. There is no water nearby to hold warmth.
  • Bay side: Bayville, Lanoka Harbor, Forked River, Waretown, Barnegat, and the lagoon neighborhoods of Toms River and Brick run a little warmer early on, then lose that advantage once the bay cools.
  • Barrier island: Mild air temperatures, but shallow pipe and constant wind.

If a Freeze Is Coming Tonight

  1. Close the irrigation shutoff valve.
  2. Open the test cocks on the backflow preventer to 45 degrees and turn its two handles to 45 degrees as well, so water can drain and expand. Step-by-step instructions are in our guide to winterizing a backflow preventer.
  3. Wrap the backflow with an old towel or blanket and cover it with a bucket or a plastic bag. This slows heat loss. It does not replace draining.
  4. Turn the controller to off.
  5. Call in the morning for a blowout.

This protects the most expensive part of the system. The lines, valves, and heads still hold water until they are blown out.

Why Late Appointments Are Harder to Get

By the second week of November, everyone who waited is calling at once and each cold forecast sets off another wave. Routes are already planned by town. We will always try to fit a late call in, and customers on an annual service plan are scheduled ahead of that rush.

Should You Try It Yourself at the Last Minute?

Only if you have a compressor that delivers enough air volume. A small garage compressor will not clear the lines and can leave you thinking the job is done. See DIY vs. professional sprinkler blowout for an honest comparison.

Already Had a Hard Freeze?

Winterize anyway, then plan for a careful spring startup. If you see water at the backflow or in the yard, see our freeze damage repair page.
